Essential maintenance work to Cookham Bridge is set to get underway from October 2023, with a road closure due to be in place from Monday 16 October for approximately 20 weeks. The bridge will be closed to motor vehicles during the work, but pedestrian access will remain.
This important refurbishment project will help extend the life of the Grade II listed structure, ensuring the bridge continues to serve the community for many years to come. Routine inspections have identified the need for essential maintenance.
If left unattended, extensive and longer-term strengthening works would be required in future. By making this investment now, we can ensure the bridge is fit for purpose for everyone to use for decades to come and avoid more disruptive work in future years.
Planning permission for the works has now been approved. The works are subject to planning permission and, if approved, would include bearing replacement, re-waterproofing, resurfacing and joint replacement.
During the work the bridge will be closed to all motor vehicles, but pedestrian access will remain. A diversion will be in place and the route can be found on the Road closure and official diversion route webpage. Businesses in Cookham will operate as usual, and residents can continue to access them via all other available roads.
This project will extend the life of the bridge, maintaining a key route and connection for residents, businesses, as well as visitors to our borough.
Keeping residents and businesses informed
Regular updates on the project will be provided to residents and businesses to keep them fully informed.
Communities and businesses will be notified in advance of any work starting to minimise disruption as much as possible, and advance road signage will be in place prior to work commencing to help motorists plan their journeys.
Prominent signage in the area will let visitors and the community know that businesses are open and continuing to trade as normal. We encourage residents and visitors to continue to support local businesses during this time.
