Resident parking discount scheme
A new resident parking discount scheme, offering one hour’s free parking in six popular car parks, was approved by Cabinet on Thursday 16 December 2021. If you are a resident of the Royal Borough, you can apply for the virtual permits required, free-of-charge, from Monday 14 February and start using your discounted sessions from Monday 4 April 2022.
Change to RingGo Parking App
RingGo, our parking payments provider, has advised that it has recently made a slight change to its parking app, which used by many councils across the UK, in order to comply with the latest national SCA (Secure Card Authentication) Regulations. These new rules affect banks and other payment service providers and are intended to enhance the security of payments and limit fraud.
This means that when someone books their parking session, RingGo now makes a pre-authorisation reservation for the maximum potential daily parking charge, which is specific to where you are parking and will be the maximum potential cost for where you are parking. This will be a range from £1.30 in on street parking locations to £19 in car parks, in order to ensure funds can be collected later. This is comparable to pay-at-pump petrol stations where users have to pre-authorise the maximum fuel delivery amount.
However, please be reassured that this is purely a pending transaction request and no money is actually collected until the session ends and then only the correct amount for the length of parking session is authorised. The reservation then automatically clears as a pending transaction request, with the timings for that dependent on clearing times between the card issuers and banks. When someone books a parking session on the App, this is explained in a pop-up message, so users are clear they will only be charged for the amount of time they actually stay to park.
