The proposed cycle parking facility for Windsor

Planning permission has been granted for a new secure cycle parking hub which will be built next to Windsor Leisure Centre and is due to open in spring next year.

The new hub, which is being funded by Active Travel England, will give people who cycle a protected space to park their bikes when using the leisure centre. Furthermore, its location on Stovell Road is on one of the main cycling routes into Windsor Town Centre and near to The National Cycle Network Route 4.

The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead has engaged with local cycling organisations to ensure the design of the new facility is what people want and need. The project also addresses residents’ concerns about security of the current cycle parking at the leisure centre.

The new parking hub will be completely enclosed, with a security entry system, offering 36 spaces as two tier racks, Sheffield stands, cargo stands as well as a pump and repair stand. People will also be able to store their helmets and belongings in lockers.

To book their parking, people will use an app which incorporates a secure ID verification process to ensure only they can get in and out of the facility. Once signed up, spaces can be booked in advance at any time, costing £1.50 per day. The hub also includes CCTV with 24/7 monitoring and app customer support.

Councillor Geoff Hill, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Traffic, Customer Service Centre, and Employment, said: “This new secure cycling hub is great for cyclists in Windsor and thanks to the valuable input from local cycling groups such as the Windsor Cycle Hub, and Windsor Ascot & Maidenhead Active Travel, we’ve been able to create a design that reflects what’s needed.

“Creating safer and more convenient walking and cycling routes, empowering more people to reduce their reliance on vehicles for short journeys where possible, not only supports our work to combat climate change, but gives residents what they need to improve their health and wellbeing.”

Construction of the new hub is due to start early next year.
