History

An article in the Maidenhead Advertiser (March 16, 2001, p11) reports that the monument was placed by the Summerleaze Gravel Company Ltd in celebration of 70 years of business for the company.

The company owned the land at the time this article was written. The monument was sculpted by Harley Street dentist Kenneth Robinson, a former Maidenhead Rugby Club hooker. The Managing Director of the company, Peter Prior hoped the hippo would remind people to look after the planet.
