Biodiversity net gain

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is the process by which any major development that goes through the planning application process must deliver at least 10% net gain on the biodiversity baseline pre-development.

Biodiversity net gain units

Through the planning process, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) sets out to ensure that developers not only offset their impact on the natural environment, but that they contribute positively by improving or creating habitats. 

It is a national mandatory requirement for a developer to achieve 10% improvement (net gain) in biodiversity, which will be managed and monitored for 30 years. 

This net gain should be achieved on-site whenever possible but alternatively may be delivered off-site or through the purchase of statutory credits at registered habitat banks.

Purchasing BNG units

BNG units will soon be available for purchase from RBWM for our registered habitat bank at Battlemead Common. 

Located within the RBWM Local Planning Authority (LPA) and the Chilterns National Character Area, Battlemead is in the heart of the Thames Valley and sits adjacent to the river Thames. 

The site covers an area of approximately 45 hectares comprising semi-improved grassland, woodland, hedgerows, river, ponds, reedbed and scattered scrub. 

The site also provides public access to greenspace, serving the communities of Maidenhead, Cookham and the wider area.

By purchasing off-site BNG units at this habitat bank, developers will contribute to the enhancement of biodiversity and improved resilience to climate change at this important location.

Units for the following habitat types can be purchased: 

  • Other neutral grassland (medium distinctiveness).
  • Mixed scrub (medium distinctiveness).
  • Individual trees (medium distinctiveness).
  • Species-rich native hedgerow (high distinctiveness).
