Trees and woodlands are an essential part of the borough’s character and identity. They help to breathe life into the area, providing a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Interference with private vegetation

It is very difficult to isolate the effects of trees when assessing the possible cause of poor plant growth.

Many plants, including grass, will tolerant the level of shade cast by highway trees, although some plants requiring full sun may do better if located outside the crown spread of a tree. There are a wide range of plants that are suitable for a variety of conditions and situations, offering alternative solutions to any adverse effects of a tree.

Some plants actually thrive under trees including

  • Lily-of-the-valley.
  • Snowdrops.
  • Bluebells and other bulbs.
  • As well as foxgloves, woodrush, box, holly, mahonia, daphne, hypericum, ruscus, vinca and ferns.

Soil type should also be considered when choosing plants for a garden.
