Household rubbish collections

Please place your bin out the night before collection to make sure it is out in time for your collection.

Most of our everyday items can be recycled and we encourage you to recycle whenever you can, but for those items not able to be recycled, these should be placed into your black rubbish bin.

Place your black bin at the front boundary of your property by 7am on your collection day

You will have your own black wheelie bin or a larger black communal bulk bin for non-recyclable materials/rubbish. Some people with limited boundary space will have black rubbish sacks.

Your black rubbish bin is collected every two weeks and is for household items that cannot be recycled

Items that can go in your black rubbish bin

The sort of things you might put in your rubbish bin are:

  • Any non-infectious or hygiene waste such as PPE gloves, aprons and masks, sanitary and incontinence pads – wrapped tightly and bagged.
  • Crisp packets. (these can also go in soft plastic recycling).
  • Broken crockery and glassware.
  • Bubble wrap. (this can also go in soft plastic recycling).
  • Cat litter.
  • Dirty and stained paper and card.
  • Disposable nappies.
  • Foil coated lids (e.g. yoghurt tops).
  • Food pouches.
  • Nappies - wrapped tightly and bagged.
  • Pet bedding and waste.
  • Plastic film and bags.
  • Polystyrene packaging.
  • Sandpaper - including any liners used in pet cages.
  • Shiny foil gift wrap and greeting cards with glitter.
  • Sweet wrappers or any item of foil coated with plastic.

Items not for your black rubbish bin

Please do not put any of these materials in your black rubbish bin:

Take these items to Stafferton Way Household Waste and Recycling Centre:

  • Broken furniture.
  • Car batteries.
  • Electrical items.
  • DIY or building waste.
  • Light bulbs.
  • Mirrors.
  • Oil cans and engine oil.
  • Paint tins.
  • Sheet glass.
  • Turf and soil.
  • Wood.

No side or excess waste

We only collect household rubbish inside the bin with the lid closed

We will not collect rubbish that is overflowing, placed on top of or beside the bin.

Your bin lid should be closed so that it can be safely lifted by the vehicles. Rubbish left in sacks next to the bin will be left behind and if your bin is so full that the lid cannot close the whole bin may be left uncollected.

If you are struggling to fit everything in, it may mean you are not recycling as much as you could.

80% of the rubbish in an average bin can be recycled, so try to reduce what you throw away and recycle as much as you can.
