Emerging supplementary planning documents (SPDs)

Maidenhead Town Centre Shopfront Supplementary Planning Document

The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead is in the process of producing a Maidenhead Town Centre Shopfront Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) which will provide an update to the guidance contained in the Maidenhead Business and Shop Front Design Guide, dated August 2013, and supports policy TR3 of the Borough Local Plan.

The purpose of the SPD is to provide detailed guidance to support high-quality, context-sensitive shopfront design across Maidenhead town centre.

As part of our commitment to revitalising the town centre, the SPD aims to:

  • promote attractive, well-designed shopfronts that enhance the character of Maidenhead
  • support economic vitality by encouraging designs that improve the shopping experience
  • preserve and celebrate heritage features, particularly within conservation areas
  • ensure accessibility and safety for all users of the town centre
  • guide planning decisions with clear, practical design principles.

Why this matters

Shopfronts play a crucial role in shaping the identity and appeal of Maidenhead’s town centre. Whether traditional or contemporary, well-designed shopfronts contribute to a vibrant, welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

This SPD complements existing planning policies, including the National Planning Policy Framework and Borough Local Plan, and will be a material consideration in future planning applications.

Next steps

A draft Maidenhead Town Centre Shopfront Supplementary Planning Document is being prepared for Public Consultation in the Autumn of 2025.
