Work begins in Windsor on 18 May at Clewer Memorial’s much loved pirate-themed play park, followed on 1 June at Oaken Grove’s wildlife-themed park in Maidenhead. Both will reopen in time for the summer holidays, ready to welcome families back to vibrant and modern spaces designed for exploration and fun.
The refurbished parks will also feature a range of accessible and sensory equipment, ensuring children with a wide range of disabilities can play, explore and socialise alongside their friends - making the spaces more inclusive.
These improvements mark the start of a wider programme to renew a number of the borough’s play parks, supporting the council’s ambition to create a cleaner, greener, and safer borough.
Further refurbishments are planned later this year at Boyn Grove, Grenfell and Vansittart play parks. Families are invited to help shape the designs ahead of this work. The council’s parks team will be at these three sites during half-term week, starting 25 May, to engage with families to gather feedback. An online survey is also on RBWM Together until 7 June.
The programme also includes refurbishing the skate park at Kidwells, with work scheduled to begin later this summer, guided again by feedback from the people who use it.
Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Leisure and Performance, Cllr Mark Wilson, said: “We’re delighted to be investing in two of our most popular family play parks, ready for children to return this summer to exciting new spaces that inspire imagination, adventure and inclusive play.
“This is just the beginning. With further refurbishments planned at Boyn Grove, Grenfell and Vansittart parks this year, we urge families and communities local to these three parks to share your views as your ideas really will shape the future of these spaces. This is an exciting opportunity for our residents to join us in getting things done!”
While the new Clewer Memorial play park is under construction, Windsor families can use the play parks at nearby Vansittart, Imperial Park and Bachelors Acre. As can Maidenhead families using the play parks nearest to Oaken Grove - Boyn Grove, Grenfell and Ockwells. The remaining green spaces and the park cafés at Clewer Memorial and Oaken Grove will remain open while the works are carried out.
