Summer Reading Challenge returns to libraries with a green-fingered twist

Children across the Royal Borough are being encouraged to grow their love of reading this summer by taking part in the popular Summer Reading Challenge, which returns to all borough libraries from Saturday 12 July.

This year’s theme is “Story Garden”, celebrating imagination, nature and creativity – and it’s a perfect fit for the borough, with new community gardens now open at both Windsor and Maidenhead libraries.

The challenge, which runs until Friday 13 September, invites children aged 4 to 11 to read six books over the summer holidays. Those taking part can collect stickers and rewards along the way, with a certificate at the end to celebrate their achievement.

To join in, families simply need to visit any RBWM library to sign up and collect a free collector folder. Children can choose any books they like, and there’s no need to finish the challenge all at once.

Councillor Jack Douglas, Cabinet Member for Communities and Leisure, said: “Our Summer Reading Challenge will excite children about reading more over the holidays – and the ‘Story Garden’ theme is engaging and fun.

“Our community gardens at Windsor and Maidenhead Libraries are welcoming spaces for families to enjoy stories and nature together. We’re proud to support this national initiative and look forward to seeing lots of young readers getting involved.”

Alongside the challenge, RBWM libraries will be hosting a packed programme of free and low-cost events and activities throughout the summer, including storytelling sessions, crafts, games and more – all designed to inspire young minds and support families.
