It comes after the council received a grant of £1m from the Department for Transport last March, that will allow companies to bid to install more on-street charge points over the next ten years. There are already 38 on-street public charge points across the borough, serving approximately 4,000 electric vehicles.
As part of the council’s plans to deliver a cleaner and greener borough, bids to install new charge points will now be invited from companies that will help it to meet the expected increase in demand from approximately 50,000 vehicles by 2035.
The contracts are expected to bring significant investment in the Royal Borough, as a proportion of all profit from new charge points will be paid to the council.
Geoff Hill, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport and Customer Service Centre said: “The progress being made to boost the number of charge points across our borough is fantastic news for our residents, who are increasingly moving towards greener ways of living.
“More and more people are using electric vehicles and this is just part of our work to create a cleaner and green borough for everyone.”
