Lift sharing

Table of Contents

Lift sharing, sometimes known as ‘carpooling’, with a family member, friend, neighbour or colleague is another great option for many trips – and if you are looking for somebody going your way, there are websites that can put you in touch. As well as having the opportunity to split the costs of travelling, lift sharing can help reduce the stress of driving for every trip and gives you a chance for a more social journey. You’re also helping to reduce traffic levels and congestion as well as freeing up parking spaces.

Research suggests that increasing average car occupancy from current levels of 1.55 people to 1.7 could save nearly 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year by 2030!

One thing to remember when it comes to lift sharing is that the driver shouldn’t be making a profit from the journey as it could invalidate their insurance or tax. The easiest way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to use the suggested contribution per HMRC’s Mileage Payment Allowance at the link below and often, if an app is used to arrange the trip, it will work this out for you.

Many local employers are helping to promote lift sharing through setting up internal networks for colleagues to arrange lifts and even offering incentives such as better car parking spots for lift sharing vehicles – why don’t you check with your employer if it’s something they do or could offer in the future? As well as helping you, your employer can gain the benefits of reduced demand for parking, more satisfied employees and a greener image by reducing vehicle emissions.
