In the summer of 2023, the council hosted a 'World Café' residents event for people living in the Norfolk Park area of Maidenhead to share how they believed improvements could be made to help more people walk, cycle and enjoy time in their streets. Many residents told us that additional traffic calming, lowered speed limit and new crossing points, together with an uplifted street environment with planting, would make a difference.
As a result of what you told us, the Council then asked for feedback on proposals to introduce traffic calming features at the following junctions:
The specific measures proposed were continuous pavement crossings for pedestrians across the roads. These proposal were put forward as an option that will both help to reduce vehicle speeds as they enter the street whilst also reinforcing the recent Highway Code changes where people crossing a side road on foot have priority over other traffic. At some junctions, the proposals also create space for additional rain garden planting too, which will retain storm water and release it slowly over time, a technique used to reduce flooding after heavy rain fall.
It should be noted that all vehicles will be able to cross these raised pavements and access them in the usual manner.
