“Berkshire has a strong economy, ambitious businesses and significant growth opportunities - we want to secure the strongest possible devolution deal for our area, one that helps unlock that potential and delivers real benefits for our residents, businesses and local services.
“Previous devolution proposals had become increasingly watered down, so if the recent announcement signals a genuine change in the government's approach, then I look forward to working with fellow council leaders across Berkshire and the wider region to understand the proposals in detail and secure the best possible outcome for our communities.
“However, the devil will be in the detail. Devolution cannot simply just be a transfer of responsibility, it must come with the powers, funding and resources needed to make a real difference locally - rather than simply shifting additional costs and pressures from Whitehall onto councils and ultimately residents.”
