Royal Borough introduces new powers to protect residents and visitors as Royal Ascot begins

The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead is introducing new powers to protect residents and visitors during Royal Ascot by tackling anti-social behaviour linked to ticket touting and unauthorised street trading.

A new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) will be in force in key areas around Ascot Racecourse, including Station Hill and Ascot High Street, helping to ensure residents, visitors and businesses can enjoy a safe and welcoming environment throughout the racing festival.

The PSPO gives community wardens or the police the power to issue Fixed Penalty Notices of £100 to individuals found to be carrying out ticket touting or unauthorised street trading. The measures are designed to reduce congestion, minimise disruption and help keep the event safe.

By providing clear, limited enforcement powers, the council aims to support a well-managed event experience, protecting both the local community and the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected to attend Royal Ascot.

Cabinet Member for Public Protection & Community Governance, Cllr Richard Coe, said: “The Royal Borough is proud to be home to Royal Ascot, one of the most popular sporting and social events in the UK calendar, attracting visitors from across the world

"As the event begins this week, these new PSPO powers will help us protect residents, businesses and racegoers by addressing issues linked to unauthorised street trading. Our aim is to ensure everyone can enjoy Royal Ascot in a safe, welcoming and well-managed environment.”

The PSPO follows reports from previous years of anti-social behaviour linked to unauthorised selling, which contributed to congestion and safety concerns. A public consultation held between December 2025 and January 2026 showed strong support for action, with 94% of respondents backing the introduction of new measures.
