Windsor & Royal Borough Museum will be able to expand its efforts to showcase Windsor Guildhall’s royal history after a successful grant from Arts Council England.
The museum has been awarded £65,895 through Arts Council England’s Museum Renewal Fund awards for its Celebrating our Royal History project – which will increase access and help preserve the heritage of the area for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.
Celebrating our Royal History seeks to highlight local history and bring attention to the royal connections and significant events at Windsor Guildhall, a Grade I listed building and a cornerstone of the town. The Museum has collected and cared for a wide range of objects related to the borough, dating from the stone ages to current times, with the collection now holding more than 13,000 objects.
The investment will ease some of the financial difficulties the Museum has faced over the last few years and will allow more visitors to learn more about the royal history at Windsor Guildhall by expanding its opening days starting in Spring 2026.
Councillor Amy Tisi, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Windsor, said: “I’m excited to see the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum receive the grant from the UK Government through Arts Council England, which will help revive the museum and continue the excellent work they do in preserving and sharing our local history. This injection of funding is vital in securing the museum’s future as a valued heritage asset for residents and visitors to the borough.”
Jon Finch, Chair of the English Civic Museums Network, said: “Across England, museums bring people together to connect with their heritage, the world around them, and with each other. We are grateful to ACE and DCMS for recognising the needs of the sector and for moving swiftly to establish and administer this fund which will help civic museums continue to serve their communities while also investing in new initiatives to strengthen long-term financial resilience.”
Visitors and residents interested in local history can also sponsor an object from the museum’s curated list of over 40 unique items. Sponsorships directly benefit the continued care and protection of the collection by funding the core operations of the Museum, and gives sponsors access to exclusive benefits, including invitation to an annual Winter Gala at Windsor Guildhall.
