Mental wellbeing service

The way mental health and neurodivergent social care support is delivered in the Royal Borough is changing.

The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead is creating a dedicated Mental Wellbeing Service within Adult Social Care.

This change strengthens social work visibility and ensures residents can access support based on need, and is not dependent upon on whether they access NHS community mental health services.

If you already access mental health social care support then you don’t need to do anything.

If you have some queries, please read our questions and answers below in the first instance.

If you still need support then you can contact the Adult Social Care’s front door team or speak to your named worker if you are already receiving a service.

What is the mental wellbeing service?

The Mental Wellbeing Service provides specialist adult social care support for people aged 18 and over whose primary needs relate to mental health, autism, or other neurodivergent conditions. Adult Social Care (ASC) mental health services focus on helping people live safely, independently, and well.

ASC support concentrates on daily wellbeing, social functioning, and quality of life. We use a strengths based approach, meaning we work with you to understand what matters to you, the strengths and resources you have, and the support that helps you stay independent.

As part of our Care Act 2014 duties, the service provides: assessments, support planning, Safeguarding and ongoing reviews.

We also work collaboratively with health services, housing teams, and community partners to provide coordinated support that promotes independence, inclusion, and wellbeing.

The Mental Wellbeing Service does not replace existing health services.

For any concerns related to your physical or mental health, then please contact your GP or, your named NHS mental health professional if you are already open to a specialist community mental health service. For urgent help call NHS 111.

Why is this change being made?

The new model aims to help residents by:

  • Widening access for people with mental health needs or neurodivergence.
  • Providing more consistent and timely statutory assessments.
  • Making governance and accountability clearer.
  • Improving prevention and early intervention.

Who can access the mental wellbeing service?

Any adult (aged 18 or above) living in the Royal Borough whose primary social care need relates to either:

  • mental health,
  • or autism or,
  • other neurodevelopment conditions.

You do not need to be open to secondary NHS mental health services to access social care support.

Will my practitioner or support I receive change?

We are aiming to minimise any changes to your care and support as part of the change in services. However, there may be times where you will have both a social worker and a named worker involved. This is likely to be time limited and would only be with your agreement.

What support is there for people who do not meet statutory thresholds?

If after your assessment you’re not allocated a social worker at this time, then you are still able to access support from the Adult Social Care front door team.

This team can provide:

  • Signposting to other statutory and community services.
  • Information, advice and guidance.
  • Links to voluntary organisations, peer support and wellbeing groups.
