Why does the bridge need to be closed to motor vehicles?

Table of Contents

Cookham Bridge will remain open to pedestrians but will be closed to all motor vehicles because the bridge is narrow (only 6m).

During the works ‘safety zones’ will be needed to ensure safe passage for pedestrians, leaving no room for cars. Because of buried telecoms cables under the bridge asphalt, pedestrians and motor vehicles cannot both be safely accommodated on the bridge during the work.
