Cookham Bridge: Essential maintenance

Cookham Bridge

Essential maintenance work to Cookham Bridge started in October 2023, with a road closure in place from Monday 16 October for approximately 20 weeks. The bridge is closed to motor vehicles during the work, but pedestrian access will remain.

This important refurbishment project will help extend the life of the Grade II listed structure, ensuring the bridge continues to serve the community for many years to come. Routine inspections have identified the need for essential maintenance.

If left unattended, extensive and longer-term strengthening works would be required in future. By making this investment now, we can ensure the bridge is fit for purpose for everyone to use for decades to come and avoid more disruptive work in future years.

The works will include bearing replacement, re-waterproofing, resurfacing and joint replacement.  A diversion is in place and the route can be found on the Road closure and official diversion route webpage

Businesses in Cookham and the High Street are open as usual and we'd encourage residents and visitors to continue to support them during the closure period. They can continue to access Cookham via all other available roads.

This project will extend the life of the bridge, maintaining a key route and connection for residents, businesses, as well as visitors to our borough.

Keeping residents and businesses informed

Regular updates on the project will be provided to residents and businesses to keep them fully informed.

Advance road signage was in place prior to work commencing to help motorists plan their journeys.

Prominent signage in the area will let visitors and the community know that businesses are open and continuing to trade as normal.
