Councillor Andrew Johnson, the Council Leader, said: “On behalf of the council, I would like to express our solidarity with the democratic state of Ukraine and our deep sympathies for the millions of people whose lives are being so brutally affected by this terrible conflict, which is sadly bringing death, injury and separation from loved ones, as well as the huge mental toll of ongoing violence and insecurity. Closer to home, our thoughts are with Ukrainians living in the Royal Borough, and the Thames Valley more widely, and especially anyone who has family or friends in Ukraine and has to endure the daily fear and uncertainty as to their wellbeing.
“As a symbol of standing together with the Ukrainian people, we will fly the Ukrainian flag on the Town Hall in the coming days, and as a compassionate borough we will continue to play our part in any Government scheme helping refugees seeking sanctuary in the UK. If local residents and businesses would like to help with the global humanitarian effort, please give what you can to the British Red Cross emergency appeal. They welcome any donation, large or small, to help people in desperate need. It's a rapidly evolving crisis, and your donation could help someone affected get food, water, shelter, medicines and first aid." Please visit
