The Mayoral Appeal seeking financial donations to pay for material to make non-surgical scrubs and experienced seamstresses to make those scrubs has been voted a success by all those involved.
The hard work of the people making the scrubs has paid off and many of the front line NHS staff at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust now have non-surgical scrubs to be proud of. The scrubs have been made in traditional material as well as more bright colourful designs – using available suitable material.
The sewers have ranged from professionals who sew for a living every day, those from entirely different backgrounds and those who retired a few years ago, like local resident Dotty. Dotty is 85 years old and as well as being a carer for her blind 90 year old husband has been enjoying her involvement in the appeal by sewing a number of the scrubs. She was delighted to be able to put her time and expertise to good use as well as helping this very important local initiative.
The Mayor’s charity for 2019/20 has also benefited from the appeal – the Mayor today delivered 30 pairs of scrubs, hats and masks to Thames Hospice. The Hospice are currently looking after patients with COVID-19 and are immensely pleased with the supply of scrubs that will help to keep their medical team safe.
The Mayor, Councillor Mrs Sayonara Luxton, said “I would like to thank all those generous residents who have donated financially and contributed material and masks to the appeal without whose input this initiative would not have been possible. I also gratefully thank all the people who have been part of this fantastic “sewing bee” under the direction of Lynda Yong Couture. The support and interest has been absolutely amazing and I am thrilled that the residents of the Royal Borough have so willingly shown their support and thanks to the wonderful NHS, who are looking after us all at this time of national emergency.
"I am very proud to be the Mayor at this difficult time and glad that, together with our residents, I had the opportunity to help the hospitals and carers, etc. The volunteers from all over have been the big success of our scrub appeal and we have been complimented on this by others from all over the country."
