Volker Highways on behalf of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead are carrying out essential major repairs to the Elizabeth Bridge on the A332 Royal Windsor Way. The work is necessary due to the severe corrosion of the bridge. The corrosion is due to a build up of water in the abutments that has caused the steel connections to corrode over time. The cable ties work together to take the load of the bridge as the vehicles travel over it.
The main element of the work involves the replacement of the 10 cable ties that bear the weight of the bridge. The majority of the repairs can be carried out underneath the bridge and therefore we have tried to keep the impact on motorists to a minimum. In order to complete the project safely and efficiently, there will be significant lane and some full road closures which will potentially impact road users.
The works will be carried out in two phases; Phase One (Enabling Works) and Phase Two (Main Works). The gap between the enabling and main works is because there are already planned road closures in place for Highways England as part of their Smarter Motorways project, and Royal Windsor Way is the strategic diversion route for any closures between junctions 6 and 8/9 on the M4 motorway. In addition, we have tried to avoid LEGOLAND's busiest period. (Their works had been planned before the Covid19 outbreak and current restrictions).
Key dates for the works phases, including full road closures and lane closures, can be found on the next page.
These measures are in place to ensure the work is completed as efficiently as possible. These dates have all been heavily coordinated with Highways England and their smarter motorways works, along with LEGOLAND and Slough Borough Council. Information will also be on our social media and borough's vehicle message signs (VMS) to inform the road users. These works are an essential part of the council's ongoing maintenance and improvement programme and are necessary to make sure the bridges are kept in an up to date, safe and usable condition. Your patience and co-operation would be much appreciated to ensure that the contractor is able to complete the works as quickly as possible and with minimum inconvenience.
The works are weather dependent and the programmed start dates may change. Any additional notification such as diversion routes and advance warning signs will be placed on various sites, including One network.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience, noise or disruption caused as a result of these works, and would like to thank you for your understanding and co-operation while we are on site.
