For King and Country 'Uncovering the stories behind our Great War heroes'
Thousands left the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead during the Great War, never to return. One of the enduring legacies we have of their sacrifice is the names on 200 war memorials in Windsor, Maidenhead and the surrounding villages.
Our Heritage Lottery Funded project involved a small team of staff and volunteers. The project invited residents from the Royal Borough of all ages to help uncover the stories of local people who gave their lives. The project started in September 2014 and continues with local volunteer support. We continue to add names, pictures and information to our database.
We are currently working on a number of memorials to enhance the lists of names and add the stories of those who died.
Search our database below to find out more about the men and women from the Borough who gave their lives during the Great War, and those who were honoured. If you have information to share about relations from the Borough who were involved in the Great War or mementoes from your family, please email email@example.com
Do you want to trace your family members during the Great War? If so contact your local library for support. Access to Ancestry is free in our libraries.
