At the Shops

Avoiding waste at the shops

  • Avoid products which have excess packaging. Choose goods which are less heavily packaged :
    • don't but items which are individually wrapped
    • try to ensure the wrapping material is made from recycled material
    • but loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packed
    • don't add extra packaging and say no to unnecessary bags
  • Buy recycled products whenever possible such as toilet paper, tissues, refuse sacks, greeting cards, writing paper and envelopes.
  • Choose longer life, energy efficient and rechargeable products such as long-life bulbs and batteries etc.
  • Buy refillable packs of liquid detergents, fabric conditioners, washing / dishwasher powder and liquids.
  • Use concentrates - concentrated products use less packaging and are often cheaper.
  • Reuse carrier bags.
  • Buy one large container rather than lots of smaller ones. It saves packaging and is often cheaper.
  • Avoid items specifically designed for single use or a short life such as tissues and disposable razors.
  • Avoid goods which rely on disposable parts e.g. choose a coffee maker with washable filters rather than one which uses disposable paper filters.
  • Make a list before you go shopping and resist the temptation to buy things you don't really need.
