Rewarding You for Recycling
Recycling will be easier and more rewarding for every local household when the council's ground-breaking RecycleBank scheme is rolled out across the borough to more than 60,000 households from June 2010.
This good news follows the hugely successful pilot started last year when more than 6,500 households were invited to help test the scheme, earning RecycleBank points for their recycling efforts.
Since then
• 70% of eligible households have activated their rewards accounts.
• More than five million RecycleBank Points have been earned for discounts and offers at over 100 shops, leisure centres, businesses, attractions and cafés/restaurants; many residents have given their Points to charity and schools.
• Residents in the trial increased their recycling by an amazing 35%.
The concept is simple - the more you recycle the more rewards you earn.
Special blue wheelie bins will be delivered to every home and, as residents in the pilot scheme have proved, recycling will get a lot simpler as cans, paper, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles will go into the one bin - no more separating them into your black and purple boxes.
You can receive fantastic rewards at participating businesses like M&S, Legoland, Magnet and Windsor Leisure Centres or to donate to charities like Fairtrade or The Tree Warden Scheme by The Tree Council.
The scheme works by using a small electronic tag which links to equipment in the collection vehicles where your recycling is weighed to ensure to get the reward points you've earned.
Your privacy is protected by the fact that no personal data is held in the system and you yourself choose if you want to take part by activating your secure RecycleBank account, either online or by phone. If you don't activate an account no personal information is stored.
To make the best use of Veolia collection vehicles, recycling will no longer be picked up by white lorries only, so you should not be concerned if you see your recycling being taken away in purple refuse trucks. This does not mean your recycling is heading for landfill, just that the collection vehicles are being used efficiently.
Thanks to your efforts the borough's overall recycling rate is already more than 37% - and we believe the new rewards scheme will mean we can keep on getting better and better.
