Green Waste Services

Changes to the existing green waste appointment service following
the launch of the subscribed green waste scheme

Since the announcement about the council's new fortnightly green waste kerbside service a large volume of enquiries have been received regarding the existing appointment service. This note explains how the existing appointment service will continue to operate and how it differs from the additional new service.

The existing appointment service for green waste does not include a separate charge to individuals – the costs are recovered from council tax, which is payable by all local residents. With the new subscribed green waste service the costs are recovered directly from subscribing resdients through an annual subscription.

The existing appointment service for green waste was intially established as an add-on service to enable residents to dispose of bulk garden waste on a seasonal, infrequent basis. It was enhanced in 2006 to enable collections to be made within a three-week window after making the appointment. The scheme has been subject to heavy demand, predominantly due to individuals making multiple and block bookings.

It is anticipated that the new subscribed service will remove the burden on the appointment service, allowing it to operate as it was initially set up ie as a bulk seasonal collection service.

With this in mind, the appointment service will:

-      be unable to accommodate block or multiple bookings and will be taking one booking at a time in future

-      be unable to provide a collection from narrow access properties

-      ask that material not be left on the public highway for collection, but, at an agreed easily accessible location on the property which will be agreed when making the booking.

-      request users to provide their own container (not a bin) with material presented in loose format.

Green waste can also be taken to the council's household waste recycling centre at Braywick, open seven days a week between 8am and 8pm (April to September) and 8am to 4.30pm (October to March). The council's bulk green collection service can be booked on 01628 796844.
