101 uses for a recycling box

And the winner is…

In June, on the strength of the Recyclebank scheme rollout, the borough encouraged residents to think outside the box and come up with innovative ways to reuse their old black and purple boxes. With one thousand Recyclebank Points up for grabs the response was very positive.

Innovative and wacky suggestions for reusing the boxes were received, making it difficult for the judges to pick a winner and two runners up.

The winning suggestion came from Mrs Mary Parsons of Maidenhead, who used the boxes to "make great seats for my homemade flowerpot couple." . The judges were impressed by the fact that Mrs Parsons not only reused the recycling boxes but had also reused her garden plant pots to make the models. Mrs Parsons will receive 500 points.

In second place and receiving 350 points was the suggestion from Karen Meade to use the boxes as a 'place for my daughter's hamster to roam around in when I clean her out - it is chew proof and high enough so she doesn't jump out'.

In third place receiving 150 points was the suggestion from Mr John Martin who converted the boxes into 'homes for hedgehogs'.

Cllr Phill Bicknell, Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: "I would like to thank all the residents for coming up with some great suggestions - I am sure the judges had a hard job. I would like to thank everyone that took the time to enter."

"The competition was a fun way to pass on a serious recycling message - we all need to do our bit and find ways to reuse everyday items and recycle as much as possible."

"We would like to encourage residents with redundant recycling boxes to continue reusing them before thinking about throwing them away."

Unwanted black and purple boxes can be handed in at Stafferton Way civic amenity site in Maidenhead.
