The Cultural Olympiad is here!

The London 2012 Games are not just about sport. They will also celebrate cultures, people and languages - in London, the UK and around the world. The four-year Cultural Olympiad started September 2008 and July 2009 marked the 3 year countdown to the 2012 Games. In the Royal Borough we have started to think about what we can achieve over the next few years that will provide a lasting legacy. This area, part of the Dorney Corridor, is one of 4 priority areas for new cultural activity inspired by 2012.

The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is for everyone. It has 3 core values :

• celebrating London and the whole of the UK welcoming the world
• inspiring and involving young people
• generating a positive legacy - through sports and cultural participation, cultural skills, tourism, social cohesion, international links and increased volunteering.

The Cultural Olympiad reflects and supports a number of themes. It:

• brings together culture and sport;
• encourages audiences to take part;
• animates public spaces - through street theatre, public art, and circus skills
• honours and shares the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games;
• encourages collaborations and innovation between communities and cultural sectors
• supports the learning, skills and personal development of young people by linking with our education programmes.

Cultural Activities and Projects

Our Librarian for Local Studies has created a webpage with a wealth of detail about the achievements of Lord Desborough, who masterminded the 1908 Olympics.

We are continuing our annual borough programmes for Arts Bursaries.

Local Volunteering - Our new projects will aim to show greener, healthier and stronger communities -and to increase our volunteer force and opportunities over the next 3 years.
