The Association of British Travel Agents
(ABTA)
The Association represents both Travel Agents and Tour
Operators. Members are required to adhere to the
Association's code of conduct and financial rules in order
to protect consumers money and so that claims can be met in the
event of a company failure. The Association also provides an
arbirtation scheme as an alternative to small cliams action
should a dispute arise between a consumer and a member.

The Association of Independent Tour Operators
(AITO)
This Association represents a number of small independent
travel companies. They ensure their members are fully bonded in
case of insolvency or if other financial problems arise.
Members must comply with a code of conduct and monitor their
standards of service. The Association also encourages members
to provide comprehensive training and promote responsible

Air Travel Operators Licence (ATOL)
This licensing scheme is managed by the Civil
Aviation Authority (CAA). Most businesses selling air travel in
the United Kingdom are required to hold a Licence. Licence
holders must lodge bonds with the CAA and these are used to
refund customers or bring home stranded customers should the
Licence holder go out of business.
