A Travel Plan is a package of measures that is designed to make sustainable travel choices more attractive for commuting trips and other business travel. Every travel plan is different, with measures tailored to address the needs of a particular organisation or site.
There are a number of measures that a business might choose to introduce as part of a plan. Each mode of transport should be considered and relevant improvements implemented. To help a business to make the right choices for the Travel Plan, a Site Assessment, Staff Travel Survey and a Business Travel Audit are recommended.
Travel Plans can have real benefits to a business, its employees and the local community. A travel plan should improve travel choice and access for employees and visitors as well as tackling existing or potential transport problems in or around the site.
Organisations implementing a travel plan, particularly those that are being introduced as a requirement of planning permission, should contain targets and monitoring processes to ensure that the plan is achieving its objectives. Further information on targets and monitoring is contained in the Council's Supplementary Planning Document on Planning Obligations and Developer Contributions. The Council has also prepared a Best Practice Guide on Workplace Travel plans to assist developers, businesses and other organisations wishing to develop a travel plan.
