Company Cars

The provision of a company car, particularly as a perk rather than to meet the requirements of the job, may act as a significant barrier to achieving travel plan targets relating to the reduction of car trips to and from the site.  Organisations should therefore consider reviewing their company car policy:

  • Restrict the choice of company car to essential business users only.
  • Encourage use of smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
  • Ensure that all company cars use ultra-efficient fuel technologies.
  • Collect data on fuel use and mileage and analyse the data to identify poorly performing vehicles.
  • Provide tele/video-conferencing facilities to reduce the need for business travel and company cars.
  • Provide car share software for use in relation to business travel.
  • Provide pool bikes / cars for business use.
  • Offer cash alternatives to company cars.
  • Offer other benefit alternatives to company cars, eg public transport season tickets, or a bicycle plus cash.
