Walking is one of the most popular travel choices for everyday journeys in the Borough. It is a non-polluting and free travel mode and is good for our community and environment.
We want to make this mode of travel more attractive to more people for more journeys. To do this, we aim to improve facilities so that they are capable of meeting the needs of all pedestrians, including those with mobility impairments.
Our priority is to develop safe, convenient and continuous networks of footways, making sure that we consider general maintenance and lighting issues. In town centres we believe that wider pavements and traffic free areas will be beneficial. In return we ask pedestrians to ensure that the clothing you wear makes you visible to all other road users.
Personal safety can be a factor in people choosing to travel by car instead of walking, cycling or taking public transport. We will continue to work with the Police and other organisations towards making local streets and public transport as safe and unthreatening as possible. See our Community Partnership website for more information on Council's commitment to improving personal safety throughout the Borough.
We hope to raise the profile of walking as an attractive travel choice for regular journeys. The promotion of workplace and school travel plans, along with the support of local schools for the Walk to School Weeks are helping us to achieve this.
Walking is also great for our health and provides social and leisure opportunities. The Royal Borough has a network of around 300km of public rights of way, offering access to the wealth of beautiful countryside, woodland, parkland and river scenery right on our own doorstep.
