This year's resurfacing programme started earlier than usual with a small group of sites, followed throughout the year by the main programme. Engineers have been working together with our term highway contractor, Balfour Beatty WorkPlace, to decide on the most cost effective treatments and plan works, which have taken place in phases starting in Spring 2011.
The types of resurfacing will be Plane and Resurface (PRS) or Surface Dressing (SD) depending on the classification and condition of each road. See the Resurfacing FAQ's for an explanation of these treatments.
Affected properties will be notified by letter 5-7 days before the work starts and signs will be displayed at each site to warn road users. In some circumstances road closures will be necessary to complete works quickly and safely, but access to properties will be maintained as far as possible - this may mean a short wait whilst works are completed directly outside a property. Where road closures are in force diversions will be clearly signed.
Additional Funding from the Department for Transport
In common with most of the country, our roads once again suffered as a result of the extreme weather conditions during last winter. In recognition of this national problem the Department for Transport (DfT) allocated additional funding to English Local Authorities based on the amount and condition of roads in the area. The Royal Borough was allocated a grant of £558,000 in March to spend on the worst affected roads, which was in addition to the £1.5m programme of works which was already identified and funded by the Borough. Information from the public and from routine highway safety inspections helped focus attention on the areas where the damage was more prevelent.
The work has been carried out alongside our annual resurfacing programme which started in May 2011. Most of the sites have now been completed, with the 2 remaining sites programmed to be carried out in October / November. The Borough has, therefore, been able to invest over £1.5m Capital, £558k additional grant and approximately £1.6m Revenue funding on repairs to roads following the severe 2010/11 Winter. Over 120 of our streets have benefited from this enhanced programme.
To see a list of the sites which have been treated with this additional funding go to the DfT Funded Road Repairs webpages.
Patching Programme
In addition to the main treatments we will be undertaking planned patching works. This is in addition to the works being carried out by our operations team, who are able to respond to the most urgent of cases. Patching involves cutting into the surface around the area of the pothole and removing the damaged surface. New material is then laid into the hole and compacted to repair the area of damage.
In some circumstances road closures will be necessary to complete works quickly and safely, but access to properties will be maintained as far as possible - this may mean a short wait whilst works are completed directly outside a property. Where road closures are in force diversions will be clearly signed.
If you would like to report a problem on the highway, such as a pothole, please call Streetcare Customer Services on 01628 683804, email streetcare@rbwm.gov.uk or use the Online Fixit Form.
