Cycle shelter

A lack of cycle storage can discourage pupils from cycling to school because of concerns about theft or damage to their bicycle. Attractive, secure storage encourages pupils to cycle to school.

We recommend the Sheffield Stand type of cycle parking, since this provides good physical support to cycles, preventing them from damage, and provides excellent security, enabling the bike frame and wheels to be secured.

We also recommend that schools choose covered cycle compounds, with storage for cycle helmets and other equipment, where possible.

Schools developing successful School Travel Plans will be entitled to grant funding from the Department for Education and Skills. This funding can be used to pay for measures such as cycle parking.
