Cycle Checklist
Keeping your bike in tip-top condition improves not only its safety but also its performance. See our checklist below to ensure that your bicycle is safe and in proper working order:
- Brakes: Apply both brakes and push bike forwards-the bike should not move. If the bike does move check for worn brake block or frayed/loose cables
- Brake cables: Check for frayed/loose cables
- Chain: lightly spray the chain with a Teflon based oil. Check for wear and rust. Tighten any slack.
Derailleur gears: Check gear levers are tight and make sure that gear changes are smooth
Frame and forks: Repair any damage and cure any rust
Lights and Reflectors: Check that these are clean and shiny
- Nuts and Bolts: Tighten any that are loose, particularly those on mudguards, brakes, chain guards and wheels
Seat and handlebars: Make sure that these are secure and at a comfortable height
Tyres: Keep them pumped up hard. Check for worn tread, bald patches and cracked or split rubber
Wheels and spokes: Check wheels run true. Repair or replace loose, damaged or missing spokes
