Royal Ascot - Traffic Arrangements

Tuesday 14th to Saturday 18th June 2011

This year's Royal Ascot race meeting starts on Tuesday 14th June 2011. Once again the organisers are anticipating substantial numbers of visitors, with the usual large crowds expected on the Thursday and Saturday. This will inevitably generate considerable extra traffic on all five days of the race meeting.

Bearing in mind residents' concerns about the extra traffic in the area, the Royal Borough will once again be using a number of measures designed to help reduce the impact on the area around the racecourse. The traffic situation will be monitored daily and appropriate action taken if necessary by the AA, who are Ascot Racecourse Ltd's Traffic Management Company, Thames Valley Police and the Council.

We are always looking for further ways to improve the traffic arrangements and in an effort to make your lives a little more tolerable during one of the busiest social occasions of the year, again there will be: -

  • No Waiting traffic cones in the roads adjacent to the racecourse
  • Signs warning motorists that cars left in these areas will be towed away
  • Enforcement of the Prohibition of Waiting by Civil Enforcement Officers
  • Two tow trucks available to remove illegally parked vehicles
  • A new taxi rank to be situated within Car Park 4 with a drop off area in Car Park 3. The access to this being off Station Hill. By providing somewhere for them to wait, taxis will have no need to loiter in roads close to the racecourse.
  • Checks on taxi accreditations by Council licencing officers
  • Burleigh Road will be closed northbound in the afternoon at its junction with the A332 Windsor to help protect the locals from "rat running"
  • Additional direction signs on alternative routes to encourage through traffic to avoid Ascot completely.
  • Two pedestrian bridges in the High Street to cut the numbers of people using the road crossings, thereby helping the flow of the traffic in the High Street.
  • The prohibition of U turns in the High Street to help with road safety
  • The closure of Course Road to prevent the anti social behaviour of previous years.
We hope these measures will go some way towards reducing the inconvenience caused by this large sporting event. These measures will apply to all vehicles, belonging to both residents and visitors, but every effort will be made to minimise the time the restrictions are in place.

We would like to thank residents in advance for their support and co-operation.

Arrival Phase (Mornings)

  • A332 Windsor Road - Between approximately 10.30 hrs and 12.00 hrs noon, there will be a one-way system from the 'Peanut' Roundabout (junction of Mounts Hill and A322 Sheet Street Road) southbound to the Heatherwood Hospital roundabout (at the western end of the A329 Ascot High Street). To travel northwards please use the signed routes. To the east of Ascot this is the B383 & to the west of Ascot, the B3017.

  • Kennel Avenue - Will be closed at its junction with the A332 Windsor Road
  • A330 Winkfield Road - north of Shepherd's White Roundabouts both lanes are used for southbound traffic so northbound traffic has to go south to the Heatherwood Hospital and then follow the signed route west on the A329 London Road & then north on the B3017 Priory Road
  • A330 Winkfield Road - south of the Shepherd's White mini roundabouts there will be two-way traffic, but traffic using the northbound lane will only be able to turn left onto the A332 Windsor Road to join the southbound traffic travelling to Heatherwood Roundabout. From there routes to towards the M3, Bracknell and Sunningdale will be as normal. To travel north towards Windsor & northwest to Maidenhead follow the signed route west on the A329 London Road & then north on the B3017 Priory Road.

  • A330 Winkfield Road - Between Holloway's Gate and the A329 London Road two-way traffic is maintained
  • New Mile Road - between A330 Winkfield Road and Cheapside Road, all traffic will be eastbound only.
  • Burleigh Road - will be closed at its junction with the A332 Windsor Road (southern end) but throughout the week access & egress will be via Kennel Ride.
