The council has an extensive system of traffic signals and intelligent signing systems. We currently have twenty-eight sets of traffic signals at junctions throughout the Borough and twenty-one signalised crossings for pedestrians.
Our computerised Urban Traffic Control System provides central control over the more traffic sensitive areas, such as the town centres of Maidenhead and Windsor, and allows us to apply adaptable traffic signal timing strategies while linking together junctions to meet the demands of constantly changing traffic flow and pedestrian movements. This type of system reduces congestion to road users and so helps to lower vehicle emissions.
Intelligent signing measures have been provided in Windsor through the use of variable message signing for the town centre car parks. These display the availability of car park spaces to motorists entering the town. This helps to avoid unnecessary queuing by directing visitors to the most suitable car park location, not just the closest.
Vehicle activated signs are also part of our intelligent signing system. They consist of flashing warning signs by the roadside warning motorists of regulations and hazards such as speed limits or road layout.
We aim to maintaining our traffic systems as efficiently as possible, but occasionally, due exposure to the elements or because of vandalism, things can go wrong. If you spot a problem with any of our traffic signals or variable message signing, you can report the fault by calling 01628 796813 or by using the following link.
