Supporting People - What is housing related support?

'Housing related support' is support that can be provided to vulnerable people who have a tenancy. Those who claim Housing Benefit* can have their support provided free whilst others may need to fund this support themselves. The support tasks that can be provided are:

  • Helping the service user to maintain the safety of the dwelling
  • Arranging adaptations to cope with disability
  • Assisting in arranging for professionals to call
  • Advice on use of equipment provided for tenant's own use
  • Assistance / advice with personal budgeting and debt counselling
  • Supporting with neighbour disputes
  • Completing benefit forms and assisting with benefit claims
  • Resettlement activities - move on advice
  • Activities necessary to enable the service user to move onto accommodation where less support is required
  • Escorted shopping
  • Chatting, social intercourse, arranging social events for tenants
  • Good neighbour tasks
  • Advice on personal hygiene
  • Reminding clients to take medicine
  • Cleaning of own property which neither tenant nor anyone else can do
  • Window cleaning of own property which neither tenant nor anyone else can do

*there are a small number of people who cannot claim Housing Benefit but may still be entitled to a free support service - this would be via the Borough's Fairer Charging Policy.
