What is Self Directed Support?

Self-directed support is about people being able to choose and manage the support they need to live their everyday lives in as fulfilling a way as possible.

If you qualify for Adult Services you may be allocated an amount of money, called a Personal Budget to spend on your care and support.

As this is a new system some things may change in the future, and some of the services described on these webpages are still being developed so will become available over time.

  • Being in control of your own care and support, whatever your level of need
  • Being in control of your assessments
  • Tailoring a support plan to suit you
  • Greater independence
  • Choosing how to spend your Personal Budget on the care you need
  • Choosing who looks after your Personal Budget and who arranges your care

There are seven steps involved in directing your own support.

Seven steps of Self Directed Support

  1. Step 1: Am I eligible?
  2. Step 2: What are my Needs? (Supported Assessment)
  3. Step 3: How much money can I expect?
  4. Step 4: Planning my Support
  5. Step 5: Managing my money (My Personal Budget)
  6. Step 6: Arranging my Support
  7. Step 7: Is it working for me?
