Integrated Working Tools & Processes

What is the Common Assessment Framework (CAF)?

  • An opportunity to sit down with someone who knows your child/young person and fully discuss their needs

  • A common process enabling practitioners to make an assessment - and act on the result

  • A standard form to record the assessment and where appropriate, share it with others

  • The CAF assessment aims to capture a range of elements that describe and affect a child or young persons development. Areas included in the assessment are health, general development, education, social development and relationships plus housing and family relationships and networks. The CAF assessment can be built upon over time and therefore focus on areas of need.

  • CAF is the only assessment that can be used by all agencies in England that deliver services to children and young people.
