Flooding:

Although the Thames is the largest river in the Royal Borough, there are a number of other watercourses e.g. the Bourne, the Battle Bourne, Wraysbury and Horton Drains, that can contribute to potential flooding problems in local areas.

Whilst the Environment Agency is responsible for flood protection and issuing flood warnings the Royal Borough is committed to working with the Agency, the emergency services and with local people to offer assistance when flooding takes place.

Before, during and after flooding incidents, the Council will help wherever possible by:

  • Providing sandbags to homes (but only where there is an imminent risk of flooding), please see Sandbags webpage for further information)
  • Closing Roads if flooded
  • Looking after the elderly and vulnerable
  • Providing evacuation centres if large numbers of people are made homeless
  • There are also a small number of portable toilets available for distribution to affected properties. However, the Council cannot provide pumps or dehumidifiers to individuals or properties.

Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment:

The Flood Risk Regulations 2009 place a duty upon the Royal Borough as a Lead Local Flood Authority to prepare a Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment.

The Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment is a high level screening exercise that includes the collection of information on historic flood events, and potential, future, flood events.

The assessment focuses on local sources of flood risk; specifically from surface runoff, groundwater and ordinary watercourses (ordinary watercourses include every stream, ditch, drain etc that is not a public sewer and does not form part of the "main river" network). Flood risk solely from the "main river" network or large raised reservoirs is not considered, as responsibility for assessing flood risk from these sources lies with the Environment Agency.

Two sets of mapping indicating areas likely to be at risk of surface water flooding, based on topography and mathematical modelling, were provided by the Environment Agency as part of the assessment undertaken. Comparison of the two mapping sets with historical data indicated that one set, the Areas Susceptible to Surface Water Flooding mapping, significantly over estimated the surface water flood risk in the Borough and that the other set, the Flood Map for Surface Water slightly under estimated the surface water flood risk in the Borough.

The Flood Map for Surface Water has therefore been selected as providing the best representation of the potential risk of future surface water flooding in the Borough.
