Walk to School Week is a national campaign to raise
awareness of the problem of increased traffic congestion at school
start and finish times by asking parents, pupils and teachers to
incorporate regular physical activity into their daily lives by walking
to and from school whenever possible. The campaign receives
widespread media coverage and is supported by thousands of schools
across the country.
If the journey is too far to walk, then the message is to drive part
way and walk the rest, so as to keep the school gate area clear of
traffic.
Schools often support walk to school week as a school travel plan
action. Each year there are two national focus weeks during which
the Borough encourages schools to promote the benefits of walking
in all sorts of imaginative ways. These usually include incentives for
pupils who walk such as stickers and certificates together with
competitions and specific themed events.
