The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and Thames Valley Police are committed to reducing road accident casualties and they have a "recruit" to help put the brakes on speeding drivers.
SID's job is to patrol local roads, reminding drivers to slow down.
The best advice is to adjust your speed by breaking steadily but firmly,
never suddenly.
On the move
SID is a hi-tec mobile Speed Indication Device, which keeps a sharp-eyed watch on drivers' speeds and, when they are detected travelling too fast, flashes up the speed on a roadside display monitor.
The aim is to draw drivers' attention to their speed and let them know they are over the limit, encouraging them to slow down.
Compact, mobile and easy to use, SID does not require permission for operating in a public place and, while the evidence cannot be used in court, it can act as a back up to police enforcement.
Drivers should be aware that traffic police can be positioned further along the road to carry out enforcement on those who continue to speed, despite SID's timely and friendly warning.
Collecting information
SID can also collect information, including the volume and speed of passing vehicles, to help the council and police decide if other speed reduction measures, such as traffic calming, need to be introduced on particular roads.
Speed facts!
! Nearly ten people die on Britain's roads every day and speeding is the single biggest cause - either driving too fast for the conditions or exceeding the speed limit
! About two thirds of all accidents in which people are killed or injured happen on roads in built-up areas where the speed limit is 40mph or less
! Two thirds of car drivers regularly break the 30mph speed limit and half of these by more than five miles per hour
! At 35mph it takes a car 21ft (6.4 metres) longer to stop than at 30mph
! If a car strikes a child at 20mph the child will probably survive
! If a car strikes a child at 30mph that same child will be seriously injured
! If a car strikes a child at 40mph the child will die
Speeding...it's not worth it!!
Drivers should be constantly aware of the speed they are doing, especially in residential areas. Cutting your speed will help reduce the number of road accidents in the Royal Borough - and save lives.
Safer Roads Campaign
The Safer Roads Campaign aims to reduce the number of casualties on the local roads by increasing speed enforcement and educating drivers about the dangers of inappropriate speed.
