Road Safety Schemes
The Road Traffic Act 1988 (as amended by the Road Traffic Act 1991) places a statutory duty on the council to prepare and carry out a programme of measures designed to improve road safety. These can include road safety education and training, safety audits and road safety engineering.
The Government has set all local authorities accident reductions targets that are to be achieved by the year 2010. These targets are set against the 1994 - 1998 baseline accident statistics. The targets are:
- 40% reduction in the number of people Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) in road accidents
- 50% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured;
- 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate.
In order to meet these targets the council puts in place an annual programme of local safety schemes which has been developed from detailed analysis of the latest injury accident record. Sites are selected where we are likely to make the greatest impact in terms of injury accident savings and the programme therefore focus on the locations with the highest numbers of injury accidents.
- In 2003 the Council recorded the lowest ever number of injury accidents within the Borough
- The total number of accidents that occurred in 2003 (445) was 15% down on the 1994 -1998 baseline and 10% lower than 2002
- The total number of people Killed or Seriously Injured is now below the annual target and has reduced by 31% from the 2002 total
