Road safety

We want the Royal Borough to be safe place for all those who live, work or visit.

We hope that by taking a holistic approach to road safety and by working in partnership with key stakeholders we can work together to benefit the borough.

Road Safety and our communities.

We are aware that Road Safety is a major concern for residents of the Royal Borough and is one of the key priorities identified in the Council's Community Strategy webpage.

We have developed a Road Safety Strategy, which will cover the period 2006-2011, which offers a broad based response to the issue of road safety at a local level.

The Strategy is guided by detailed analysis of accident and casualty data and addresses key areas in line with national policy.

The Road Safety Strategy found in Annex E of the Local Transport Plan sets out how the Council will respond to key road safety issues over the next five years.

Road Safety - National perspective

The Government issued casualty Reduction Targets to all Local Authorities in it's white paper 'Tomorrows Roads - Safer for Everyone'. The white paper can be found on the Department for Transport web site (external link)

These are listed below:

Target

Status in the Royal Borough

Reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents by 40%

Ongoing

Reduce the number of children killed or seriously injured in road accidents by 50%

Ongoing

Reduce the number of slight injury casualties by 10%

Ongoing

We are working towards meeting the key government targets in respect of fatal and serious injury casualties and we will be looking to build on our success by highlighting areas where road safety problems still exist.

Road Safety - How we work

The Thames Valley Police who record all attended road traffic injury accidents within the Borough supply the accident data used by the Borough Council. By analysing this data it is possible to search for patterns of accidents or common factors that might be involved.

This information is then used to implement appropriate measures, which may help to reduce the occurrence and severity of accidents.

Casualty reduction

We have a three strand approach to casualty reduction. By creative use of education, enforcement and engineering measures we aim to reduce casualties within the Borough.
