The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 placed a duty on all highway authorities to produce a Public Rights of Way Improvement Plan for their area.
This is a 10-year strategic document and is the prime means by which the
Council will identify the changes
to be made to the local rights of way network to meet the
Governments aim of better provision for walkers, cyclists, equestrians,
carriage drivers, motor vehicle users and people with mobility problems. It is
a wide-ranging plan, covering all aspects of the management and improvement of
the network to meet the likely future needs of the public.
The plan has been in development since 2003, and the final document was published in July 2005.
