Maidenhead Streets and Spaces

PROM logoPublic Realm Strategy

The spaces and streets between buildings make up the 'public realm'. The quality of streets and the pedestrian environment together with the ease of finding the way around the town, all affect the attraction of the town centre. The adopted Public Realm Strategy looks at how to improve the public realm and guide future co-ordinated investment in Maidenhead.

In moving part of the Public Realm Strategy into reality, Maidenhead Town Centre has seen new network signage installed around the town. This includes monoliths, finger posts and subway signs. New trees have also been planted.

A paving masterplan has been prepared to guide new paving style, adopting a hierarchical approach to the streets in the town centre based upon whether pedestrian or shared use occurs, and the importance of the street in relation to the public realm. The paving masterplan follows the consultation carried out last year on paving styles, and deliberations of the Partnership for the Rejuvenation of Maidenhead (PRoM) and the Town Centre partnership.

Public Art Masterplan

The Public Realm Strategy proposed the development of a Public Art Masterplan (PAM) to coordinate art in the streets and spaces of the Town. The PAM has been formulated following consultation with a range of groups and individuals and was approved by Cabinet in November 2011. The Pam was developed by Maggie Bolt Associates with input from the Walter Jack Studio, called Maidenhead Locate Create Connect it is focused on Maidenhead town centre but outlines principles that should be applied to other parts of the Borough when the Council or developers are proposing art installations in the public realm. A copy of the Executive Summary and the full Masterplan with its appendices is available to download from the links below.
