Sustainability Appraisal

The Sustainability Appraisal (SA) process assesses the policies within the Local Development Framework (LDF) to ensure they are compatible with the aims of sustainability, and achieving high levels of environmental, social and economic performance. The Scoping Report sets out the methodology for undertaking this task.

The first part of the Scoping Report is to identify other policies, plans, programmes, strategies and initiatives (PPPSIs) that may influence the options to be considered when preparing Local Development Documents. The full PPPSI Review is contained in Background Paper A.

The second task in preparing a Scoping Report is to gather baseline data for the Borough. This will assist in identifying key sustainability issues and will help to predict and monitor the effects of proposed policies. The SA Baseline Data can be found in Background Paper B.

The SA Report will show how each document meets sustainability objectives and what options were considered in preparing the document. It will also show how proposals to mitigate the adverse effects of policies have been selected.

We will consult on the SA Reports at the same time as we consult on the Local Development Documents to which they relate. Consultation results will enable us to update the SA and keep it relevant. For current consultations please see Consultation Documents.

These sustainability appraisals will also encompass the requirements of the European Directive on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). SEA is a process to ensure the significant environmental effects arising from policies and plans are identified, assessed, mitigated and monitored.
