A large building is being built close to my house. The new property directly overlooks my back garden & I would like to do something to restore some privacy. Are there any restrictions on erecting a trellis with creeping plants above the existing fence?
Many boundaries are considered to be "permitted developments" and so do not require planning permission. Some common exceptions may include:
If the boundary faces onto a highway it may not exceed 1 metre in height
If a boundary does not face a highway it may not exceed 2 metres in height.
If the property is a Listed Building then planning permission is required to erect or change a boundary
If you are planning to create or modify a boundary you should be sure to consult anyone who shares the boundary to avoid disputes. You should be clear as to the ownership of land on both sides of the boundary before any works are commenced. In this instance as the combined height would not exceed 2 metres the fence may not require permission but you should check with the Development Control team before commencing.
