In accordance with the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, every local authority is required to have a Youth Offending Team (YOT). The YOT is a multi-disciplinary team made up of professionals from a variety of agencies. In the team there are Social Workers, a Probation Officer, Police Officer, Health Worker, Education Worker, Youth Worker, Bail Support Worker and Parenting Co-ordinator.
The YOT provides a service for young people aged 10 - 17 who are offending or at risk of offending and their families/carers. The service is provided with due regard for the victims of these offences.
Local authorities are required (Section 40 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998) to formulate and implement for each year a Youth Justice Plan (copy can be downloaded below). The Plan sets out how youth justice services in the area are to be provided and funded and provides information on the operation of the YOT, including functions and targets for the coming year. This Plan is submitted to the Youth Justice Board.
